Traditional Aikido

Aikido is a Japanese martial art, founded in 1942 by O’Sensei, Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969): Aikido as we know it today was based on O’Sensei’s study of many of the ancient martial arts of Japan, including: Japanese sword techniques, some of which date back to the 11th century

Skilled practitioners of Aikido learn to blend into an attacker's motion to either dissipate the energy of the attack or to re-direct the attacker's aggression against themselves

Whilst most styles of Aikido are not competitive, ample opportunity is given in training to experience positive attacks and to develop practical techniques and movement from single or multiple attacks. Unlike many of the kicking and punching arts, Aikido does not depend on following a set form of techniques (kata) to deal with an attacker. As the Aikido student progresses the movements become instinctive and students learn to move from one technique to another to respond to the changing circumstances of an attack

Yoshinkan Aikido

Yoshinkan Aikido, at the request of O'Sensei, Morihei Ueshiba; Founder of Aikido was adapted and developed from Traditional Aikido by Shioda Gozo Sensei; Founder of Yoshinkan Aikido, for the purpose of efficiently teaching practical Aikido in a fast and effective manner to the Japanese Riot Police. Yoshinkan style of Aikido, when used for self defence, can counter many different attacks

UK Shinwakai Aikido practises and teaches a style of Aikido which encompasses the formal structure of Yoshinkan Aikido, the flowing movements of Traditional Aikido while maintaining an open mind to all other styles of Aikido

The attraction of Yoshinkan Aikido, is that it is an efficient, well structured and practical style of Aikido that can be used to counter any attack, without causing serious injury to the aggressor, the techniques practised, require very little strength to make them effective, and therefore can be practised by both men and women of all ages

So, if you would like to learn a martial art that doesn't use strength; would like to expand your mental alertness; increase your self confidence or even just improve your level of fitness - Aikido could be the 'way' for you!
